May 2019

We have started to really get going at Caer Alyn although it has been rather slow especially in January. Alan Brown, because of work and finishing his Master’s degree, has been very busy!

However, we have been busy giving our office, tools room, finds room a good spring clean…..and didn’t it need doing!! There are many very upset spiders…..and lets not mention what else we found! Talk about doing garbology ….ancient sandwich was found plus underwear as well as numerous touchy feely boxes of finds including lead! Needless to say that has been removed!

The big tidy up has given us impetuous to get the CAYA 1 trench finds sorted! Thanks to Karen Gavin (Big Heritage), we have had a refresher workshop in post -excavation handling finds and curating them. We are very grateful for Karen’s help and have, since, implemented her advice! CAYA1 trench is in the process of being closed as we are, finally, putting a small report together (we have been trying to do this for…ever?!) . The finds from the trench are being photographed, put on a database and we are hoping to send the ceramics to an expert for identification soon.P1040332a

The pace of archaeology at Caer Alyn has started to quicken over the last month! We are opening up a new site within an enclosure which has been puzzling us since 2004! A test pit has been put in and it appears to be full of cobbles but no significant finds other than possible burning. So we are going to explore this further.

As always, we are very grateful for the hard work our volunteers have done at Caer Alyn!
