Summer Dig 2024

The Caer Alyn summer dig for 2024 is now over. Although we had rather more rain than we had bargained for, on the whole the weather has been kind to us and we had a really enjoyable and productive three weeks out in the field.

At the start of 2024, we started clearing back over a decades’ worth of undergrowth from a previous excavation which contained two trenches, 14 and 14A.  Our main aims at the start of the summer dig were to finish clearing these trenches back to the levels reached at the end of the previous excavation, then to record and reevaluate the trenches and start opening up new areas. These aims have largely been accomplished. The two trenches we have reopened are starting to hint at the presence of more archaeology which we hope to pursue in future months.

We were very fortunate in having the help of several new volunteers who were all enthusiastic and hard-working; many thanks to Trish & Carl, Andrew & Tom, Joe, Isla, Sian, Amy, Faye, Dan and Helen’s Mum. And to all our regular team – Karen, Colin, Tony, Laura, Erin, Helen, Annabelle – who made a big effort to come out and help despite all their other work and family commitments. Thanks as always to the landowners, Russell and Ken, for their support and hospitality.
